What Are Invisalign Refinements? When Your Teeth Need Extra Time
• 3 min read • By Dr Sajitha S
You are on Tray 20 of 20. You are excited to finish. You look in the mirror. Your teeth look great, but… that one front tooth is still slightly twisted. Or there is a tiny gap that hasn’t fully closed.
Is the treatment failed? No.
You just need Refinements.
At The Dental Studio, we are transparent about the process. Biology is not always 100% predictable. Here is what refinements are and why they are a normal part of the journey to perfection.
“Man Plans, God Laughs” (and Teeth Resist)
The original ClinCheck plan is a computer simulation. It assumes your body will respond perfectly to the plastic forces.
However, in reality:
– Some bone is denser than others.
– You might have worn Tray 12 for only 18 hours a day instead of 22.
– Some teeth (“stubborn lateral incisors”) are notoriously hard to rotate.
Because of this, you might reach the end of your box of aligners and be at 90% of your goal. Refinements are the extra steps to get that last 10%.
The Refinement Process
It is simple and painless.
Step 1: Evaluation. On your “Final” appointment, Dr. Sajitha assesses the result. We ask you if you are happy. If we see imperfection, we recommend refinement.
Step 2: Rescan. We take the attachments off (usually) and take a fresh iTero 3D scan of your current position.
Step 3: New Aligners. Align Technology fabricates a small batch of new trays (usually 5 to 10 sets).
Step 4: Wear. You wear these just like normal.
Step 5: Done. Once the refinement is finished, we move to retainers.
Does It Cost Extra?
This depends on the Package you chose at the beginning.
– Invisalign Comprehensive: Usually includes Unlimited Refinements for 5 years. You don’t pay a rupee extra.
– Invisalign Lite: Usually includes 1 or 2 sets of refinements.
– Express: Might not include refinements (pay per additional aligner).
This is why we often recommend the Comprehensive package for complex cases. It creates a safety net. You pay once, and we work until it is perfect, no matter how many trays it takes.
How to Avoid Refinements (Tracking)
While refinements are free (mostly), nobody wants to extend treatment by 2 months.
To finish on time:
1. Use Chewies: Every day. It ensures the aligner grips the tooth.
2. Wear Time: 22 hours. No excuses.
3. Monitor Tracking: Look at your aligners daily. Is there a gap between the edge of the tooth and the plastic? If yes, you are “losing tracking.” Go back a tray or use screwies more.
Refinements vs. Mid-Course Correction
Sometimes, we don’t wait until the end. If at Tray 10 we see a tooth isn’t moving, we might stop, rescan, and order new trays immediately. This keeps the train on the tracks.
Conclusion
Refinements are not a failure; they are fine-tuning. Think of it like tailoring a suit. You buy the suit (Main Treatment), but then the tailor nips and tucks the waist and cuffs (Refinements) to make it fit exactly right.
At The Dental Studio, we are perfectionists. We won’t let you leave with “good enough.” We aim for “perfect.”
